Those who hike and bike off the beaten path may soon have a new place to recreate.
A public hearing Tuesday night at the Penfield Town Hall provided details about a proposed Irondequoit Creek Valley Trail. The Genesee Transportation Council says plans call for a multi-use trail that covers more than five miles.
It will connect with an existing trail which runs behind Panorama Plaza. The proposed trail could someday be part of an alternative transportation and recreation corridor linking with new trails being built in Durand-Eastman Park and the Genesee Riverway Trail that goes through the city of Rochester.
"You can almost actually start in the town of Penfield, go north to the lake, in an ideal world, go north to the lake, go down the Genesee River almost to the Pennsylvania border," said Rick Williams, a mountain biker. "How fantastic is that? And crossing a minimum number of roads, exposing yourself to a minimal amount of traffic and offering just a fantastic recreational experience."
Once a feasibility study is complete and plans are finalized, the town of Penfield will then be able to apply for federal funding for the proposed trail.
